which is located somewhere between the Oklahoma Land Rush and the Chicago Loop! All your recipes look yummy! I am sure that your Friday night dinners are great fun! When I was little kid in Mattapan we would walk a few blocks every Friday night for a Kosher dinner – at that time when I was 4, 5, or 6 and younger I suppose I believe that my Boobi and Zedi who lived on Middleton Street in Dorchester kept a Kosher house. Their house was great fun for Aunt Cyndi and me. Chopped liver, very salty chicken soup, other Jewish dishes. There was a great attic where we would find old clothes, button-up shoes from the turn of the last century (1900 ), and traces of my grandparents’ immigrant past – Boobi a Fishstein from Vilna in Lithuania, and Zedi a Dreyfus from Odessa, Russia on the Black Sea.
Zedi had the family business in Norwood, Mass. on Main Street – fresh fruit and produce gathered every morning at 4-5 AM. from Haymarket in Boston. He and his brothers, in-laws, and cousins had that store for 50 years until the early 70’s. Boobi was Nettie and Zedi was Sam, your middle namesake. The tradition of Friday night, Shabbas dinners, was a ritual and it allowed us as a family to gather and share home cooked food.
